Job Description
The University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout), Wisconsin's Polytechnic University, seeks a dynamic individual committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching and guiding students interested in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) related careers. This is a tenure-track position in the Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Department at the Assistant Professor level with an anticipated start date of August 18, 2025.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum / Required
- Earned doctorate in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or related field required by employment start date
- Record of scholarly activity or industry experience in Machine Learning
- Interest in teaching undergraduate courses at a primarily undergraduate institution
Highly Desired
- Coursework, teaching, or curriculum development in Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence
- Interest in involving undergraduate students in research
RESPONSIBILITIES
UW-Stout is a primarily teaching institution with faculty teaching typically 24 credits per year. As such, faculty hired for this position teach an average of 12 credit hours of coursework each semester, including lower- and upper-level courses in Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence and other lower- and upper-level courses in their discipline. Involvement in curriculum development; research and scholarly activity; and service to the department and the university are expected along with other duties as assigned by the department chair. Faculty provide student academic advisement and conduct assessment of student learning.
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
The Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Department has 25 full-time members, a strong tradition of excellence in teaching, and a growing program of scholarship and research in mathematics, computer science, statistics, and related areas. The department received the 2008 University of Wisconsin System Regents Teaching Excellence Award for Academic Departments and Programs. The department is committed to student-centered and technology-enhanced instruction. Technology usage includes students working on laptops in the classroom, web enhancements (e.g., course management and on-line homework systems), and interactive distance education courses. Faculty members involve undergraduate students in research supported by national and state level grants. For several years, the department has actively contributed to Wisconsin Science Olympiad.
The department offers all the core courses necessary for the Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (~110 students), Computer Science (~450 students), Cybersecurity (~75), and CNIT (~100) programs as well as coursework supporting five Engineering programs (~1000 students). The department also provides service courses (in all three disciplines: statistics, mathematics, and computer science) for the numerous programs within the university. Typical class sizes range in size from 20 to 35 students. The department is also developing a Master's Degree in Applied Computer Science to begin in the Fall 2025. Opportunities for teaching Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning courses to graduate students (both from the Master's in Applied Computer Science and from several other programs) will be available.
