Assistant Professor of English (two open positions)
The Department of English and Philosophy seeks candidates for two tenure-track assistant professors of rhetoric and composition who will primarily teach courses in developmental and first-year writing, as well as occasional courses in rhetorical theory, professional writing, and advanced composition. The successful candidates will have strong backgrounds in programmatic assessment and curricular development, in addition to a record of teaching excellence in composition. Applicants with experience or interest in writing program administration are especially welcome, as the department seeks candidates with the capability to eventually direct the first-year writing program. Applicants specializing in basic (developmental) writing pedagogy are also encouraged. In keeping with the polytechnic mission of the university, successful candidates will bring pragmatic, career-focused, and collaborative approaches to instruction. Stout is a laptop campus; the successful candidates will demonstrate pedagogical approaches that reflect competence and interest in classroom technology and emerging media. Departmental and university service, research in the area of composition studies, student advising, a willingness to pursue grants, and engagement in assessment of student learning are expected. The anticipated start date for these positions is August 2018.
Required: Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, Teaching of English as a Second Language, or related field conferred prior to employment start date. Demonstrated commitment to quality teaching of first-year composition.
Desired: Experience, scholarly research, and/or coursework in writing program administration and/or basic writing pedagogy. Experience and/or interest in working with diverse students and faculty
Teaching a 4/4 load comprised of primarily first-year composition courses, with occasional intermediate and advanced writing courses. Scholarship in rhetoric and composition; service to the department and university, including curricular development and assessment.
The Department of English and Philosophy houses the university’s first-year writing sequence, as well as general education courses in professional writing, literature, logic, and philosophy, many of which fulfill one or more general education requirements (e.g. ethical reasoning and social responsibility, US-based and global cultural competence, interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary issues). Additionally, the department offers a bachelor’s degree in Professional Communication and Emerging Media and a master’s degree in Technical and Professional Communication, along with minors in English Writing and Literature, Journalism, and Philosophy. Department faculty pursue a wide variety of scholarly interests, including rhetorical theory, professional and technical communication, race/ethnicity studies, free speech issues, creative writing, multicultural domestic and global literatures, gender studies, age studies, green studies, disability studies, the digital humanities, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
