Art Foundations Lecturer
The University of Wisconsin Stout is seeking two individuals to teach art foundation courses in the School of Art and Design that support majors of Animation and Digital Media, Art Education, Game Design and Development, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Studio Art, and Video Production. They will contribute to a growing, dynamic, and rigorous learning atmosphere with willingness to use traditional, alternative, and digital delivery methods including participation in a laptop environment. These positions are full time for the academic year with intent to renew at 50% or above.
Applicants should have the necessary skills and experience to teach in two or more areas of drawing, 2D design, and 3D design. A commitment to undergraduate teaching is necessary. In this role, individuals will be part of a foundations instruction team who work with the foundations coordinator to ensure that teaching meets course objectives. As part of the foundations team, individuals will engage in course and program assessment of student learning, and support students in the pre-BFA first-year-experience. Must also maintain a healthy and safe classroom environment. Will perform other duties as designated by the department chair.
Application materials should present evidence of teaching potential and knowledge of the following:
- the principles and elements of design;
- comprehension of broad historic and contemporary methodologies, processes, and practices as they relate to art and design;
- a sensitivity to design aesthetics and critical thinking as well as the ability to articulate issues of form and content as they relate to drawing, 2D design, and 3D design;
- creative and artistic excellence.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum / Required
- M.F.A. in Studio Art or related field
- Ability to teach at least two of the following three disciplines: 1) beginning and intermediate drawing, 2) 2D and 3) 3D Design foundations courses with traditional or digital applications
- Evidence of teaching potential
Highly Desired
- Experience teaching foundations classes (drawing, 2D and 3D)
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching foundations classes
- Active professional studio practice
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach undergraduate courses to include Drawing I (observational drawing), Drawing II (color and expressive drawing), Two-Dimensional Design Foundations, or Three-Dimensional Design Foundations.
- Conduct assessment of student learning. This includes contributing to academic program assessment and continuous improvement processes, in collaboration with faculty and staff.
- Maintain a healthy and safe classroom environment.
- Demonstrate organizational skills and collegiality.
- Foster a rigorous and inclusive learning environment.
- Use traditional, alternative, and digital delivery methods including participation in a laptop environment.
- Attend department meetings.
- Perform other duties as assigned by chair.
PROGRAM INFORMATION
The School of Art & Design has over 80 faculty/staff and over 1,200 students, making it the largest higher education art and design entity in the upper Midwest. The school serves six distinct BFA programs, including Animation and Digital Media, Game Design & Development—Art, Graphic Design & Interactive Media, Industrial Design, Interior Design, and Studio Art, Arts Administration & Entrepreneurship and Video Production, and minors in Art History, Studio Art and Photography and Video, a BS in Art Education, and an MFA program in Design.
